LIGHT, LIGHT, LIGHT!
Winter Solstice--finally!
Leena St. Michael, E-RYT
|
|
Many of us celebrate Christmas, Hannukah or New Year's during this time of year. I get excited about the Winter Solstice because from then on for six months, it gets more and more light every single day.
I love sunshine! I'm originally from St. Petersburg, Florida--home of the Tampa Bay RAYS! It's sunny all four seasons in Florida. In fact, it's SO sunny in St. Pete (How sunny is it?--you query) that the prestigious St. Petersburg Times newspaper is given away free following any day in which the sun does not peek out from the clouds in a 24 hour period, which is not very often. The St. Pete Times has always been a prosperous paper.
So, when I moved to Northern California, it was quite a climate change. Days and sometimes weeks of mostly gray overcast, rain or fog could leave me depressed.
Living six months of the year in a depression was not going to work. How do I live in harmony with the seasons?
I found that fall is that time to release, to let go, to clean out the closets of my home and of my heart. I start making soups and storing foods for the winter so I won't have to go out so much. I make a list of indoor projects that I love and never make time to do when the sun is shining. I also practice forgiveness of myself and others for not meeting my expectations. I let go of limiting thoughts that keep me in a "bonsai container" of myself. This activity, in itself, reveals the natural love and light of our true nature.
Winter is a time of renewing energy by turning within and resting. Its a great time to go to sleep earlier and stay in bed a little longer.
The wintertime is for lighting the inner fire, cultivating the inner glow. Wintertime is a wonderful time to practice meditation. (I'm starting a new class at Oak Hill Park Community Center on January 13th, by the way.) It is when we slow down, become still and open to possibilities that our creative juices start to flow.
Then...as all of nature, we awaken with more light , new life and lots of energy to bloom abundantly in the spring.

KEEP DREAMING!
Keep Focused.

Recently, one of my long-time students from 24 Hour Fitness was laid off from her job because her company folded. I suggested that she enjoy the time off and celebrate. She had graduated.
She started using her time to come to all the yoga classes we offered. She kept envisioning the job she wanted and what could be possible. She kept sending out resumes and networking, refusing to be depressed.
The other evening, she came up to me after class. She was beaming. She landed a new job in less than two months. She would earn more money and receive more vacation time every year.
Instead of becoming trapped in the headlines of recession and depression, she kept practicing yoga: mind, body, breath. She kept focused and always aware of the possibility that leaving her old job just might be a wonderful gift.
Everyone has a unique purpose in being here on Earth;and a special combination of talents, resources, physical qualities and attributes designed with perfect efficiency to express that purpose. Dr. Michael Beckwith (The Secret) says that our purpose is always an expression of love. He also says...and this is the best part...that our higher purpose is always our heart's desire.
When we keep focused on our purpose..on the love of self, nature and all others...and stay disciplined in yogic practices, we move beyond the limiting pervasive thought-forms of our culture.
A focus on the dream and the good of all was the spirit of Barrack Obama's campaign. Using this technology is how we will change America. Not through our might, but our steadfast unrelenting attention, intention and effort on the dream.
For those who are seeking change, or had extreme change thrust upon them, I offer "New Beginnings" transformational sessions at KURE Wellness Retreat to facilitate a continuing environment of creativity, possibility and focus on your purpose...your heart's desire. Contact me, now, for more information.

What is the Opposite
of Love?
--Memorable teaching from Amma's Thanksgiving visit
|
|
Amma says that the opposite of love is not hate. It is fear. Now, many of us have known that intellectually from our very first self-help book.
Amma added the antedote: Focus on the love and the fear will dissolve. This is all we have to remember and practice.
Amma is the perfect example. She has physically embraced more than 26 milllion people on six continents in the past 30 years. Just about any time you might think of Amma, this tiny woman from South India, she is hugging people; one after another after another. She is listening to their sorrows. She is blessing their children, She is giving counsel on how to be more loving. She is singing praise to the Divine every single night with her traveling band of senior devotees. She forgives everyone and everything.
Many years before I met Amma, I discovered a writing, albeit a declaration of intent to love, written by Dr. Howard Thurman. Thurman is considered to be one of the leading Christian theologians in U. S. history. He was a mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King. This passage opened my heart and became my intention to love.
It's named, "More Loving In My Heart". You can listen to it, now, on my website.
I recorded the reading with the beautiful music of award-winning musician, Benjamin Dowling from his CD entitled "Ahimsa". Ahimsa means "non-harming". Ahimsa is the most important precept of Ashtanga Yoga, considered the "raja" royal path.). To listen, simply click this link to the "Leena's Voices" webpage and then click "Inspirational Reading".

|
|
I'm delighted to offer private, semi-private and couples' yoga sessions at Kure Wellness Retreat. From now through Valentine's Day, February 14th, 2009, I'm offering special pricing to introduce the benefits of personalized yoga for physical and emotional health, greater energy, deepening of relationships and profound relaxation. I'll guide you to develop a home practice with modifications for your body, mind and lifestyle. Couples, I can teach you easy and fun partner poses. I can guide you to a deeper therapeutic experience to release tension held in mind and body freeing up energy for greater joy and creativity. Or perhaps, you have never taken a yoga class or have physical challenges and simply want to learn the basics before you step out in public.
Included in this Special Yoga Series Package is a 30-minute infrared sauna after each session. I am amazed at how I feel more energized and refreshed after an infrared sauna! In a regular sauna, I usually leave feeling a bit wrung out. Infrared sauna heat is like our body heat or the beneficial rays of the sun. One can take a higher heat for a longer period of time. The infrared heat penetrates deeper into the tissues to detoxify and purify the body. One can listen to soothing music while in the sauna that warms and soothes the heart and soul as well.
Contact me, now, or call KURE Wellness Retreat at: 925-837-7600 to schedule an appointment. I have regular hours on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. I can also accomodate you on other days by special appointment.
